Chapter Twenty-Seven

Diving into a roll, I snatched one of the SecuraDroids already down, and scooted back behind the water tank.

More blaster rounds seared the water container’s shell, as I judged the distance from the deck to the spiral staircase winding up the side of the tank. I launched as hard as I could with the bot’s inert form slung over my shoulder and heard the side of an internal tank pop with the ear-splitting rend of metal, followed by screams, as tons of water flooded the area.

“What did you think would happen, you bjoreks?” I muttered.

I didn’t have long before safety systems kicked in, activating pumps to recycle the water into the remaining uncompromised tanks, so I ripped the access panel off the back of the security bot and found the banks of capacitors that applied the charge to its electrodes. Its main power source was offline, but that was fine. The capacitors had all I would need.

Bypassing the safety circuits, I pulled the main leads from the capacitors, and bent them together. The pumps were cycling by now, taking the water level down and I could hear the splashing of boots as my pursuers slogged their way towards me.

With a grunt, I tossed the bot into the water, where the capacitors discharged on contact. Once again, my muscles screamed in protest as the electricity surged through the water, but I could take it.

I was betting my security buddies below weren’t as hardy as I was.

As the capacitors finished their discharge, and control returned to my muscles, I shook off the pain and stiffness, making my way down the stairs to the deck, which only had a few centimeters of water left.

The security team and third SecuraDroid lay in various stages of semi-consciousness. One of the men had even managed to fling his blaster close to my position. I grabbed it and dashed to the maintenance hatch, flinging it open and jumping in, gripping the ladder with one hand as I slid into the tunnels again.

As I limped along the tunnel, I checked the blaster, but the charge pack had no reading. The water plus electrical discharge from the bot must have fried it. I was still weaponless except for my knife, so I dropped the blaster and kept moving.

All this recent activity was not allowing my leg to heal well, in spite of my augmented abilities, but I managed to get down several levels without incident, until the next big space to cross, the ship’s hangar.

“Hey, Teague, how’s it going?” I sent over our private channel. I got no response. I had no way of knowing if that was because he was busy, had managed to get himself captured, they were still down, or if he’d turned them off again.

No choice but to keep going.

After stopping to rest my injured leg a few times, which had finally started to heal because I’d stopped jogging and started walking, I soon came to the maintenance tunnel hatch that opened into the hangar, then creaked the hatch open and peeked out.
